I like permutation as a starting point. I am fascinated by faces. Facial features, which are few in number, can be arranged and rearranged to give an infinity of likenesses. No two faces are ever the same. The image of a face may be the physical resemblance of a person or it may be an abstract attempt to depict an idea or an emotion. Perhaps making images of the face is a way of expressing an interest in and a response to other individuals.
This selection of work is drawn from all stages of my life as an artist. The images may seem to be very different from each other because they have been created in a variety of media – oil paint, acrylics, gouache, etching, lithography, lino print, pencil, embroidery, collage, string. They all seem to me to be explorations of the individual identity of people and places. However, I admit to having a bit of fun with the imagery in the process. I have always doodled.
